What’s in a Number? Apparently a Lot
Ten points. It sounds like an Olympic scorecard, but last night it was Hillary’s scorecard. If you think that this has anything to do with North County San Diego, it does. We’re part of the United States, right? People are either cheering or huffing around today. I would have been the latter up until last night at around 8 o’clock. Granted, that is when I poured myself a glass of Fetzer Gewurztraminer, which usually admonishes every negative thought anyway, but I realized something as I stared at the “legs” of wine streaming down the side of my glass. First, that wine should not have legs…I mean it is essentially the separation of the water present in the wine and how quickly it evaporates on one’s glass, which has very little to do with legs. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly I realized that Americans do care who their next president is.
Americans have been separated…have been driven apart over the past eight years by a man who has about a 2 on the scorecard. How he is still even that high is questionable, but when I looked back at the television screen and saw all of those Pennsylvanians, supporters of both Clinton and Obama turning out in droves I realized there is a pressure, a drive to elect someone who will be able to take that number 2 on the current scoreboard of American satisfaction and turn it into a much needed 10. This has become an issue of who would be best at doing just that and Americans are passionate. They want someone who speaks for them and cares for them and most of all represents them. Not someone who says in a response to question about the Iraq War, “Well I’ve only got about 10 more months left in office…so you know…” A touch of senioritis in the office of the presidency is just not acceptable and as dirty and bitter as this primary has become, most voters seem determined to bring their country’s standing from a D- to an A. My only hope is that they can do it somewhat respectably. And Senator McCain, that means you too.
