ABC’s of Why Education is So Important
A high school in San Diego is planning on holding debates this week in its current events class. The debates will reflect social issues that are confronting today’s society. Activities like this are important because they get kids to think for themselves. This should not be the “I agree with whatever is told to me generation.” This should not be a generation that blindly follows policies that harm our economy, blatantly ignore the pressing issue of climate change, and allows an administration to lead us into a disastrously unjust war. Education ignites thought, action and interest. But education is always the first thing cut when the economy hits a rough spot. We are seeing the signs of education depletion in North County, San Diego, and for me it is troubling.
I am happy though that dedicated, hard working yet underpaid teachers are making all their efforts to keep kids engaged in reading, writing, learning and engaging in thoughtful debates. Perhaps these school debates will be much more focused on real issues that are shaping America and the world today…more so than that ridiculous tabloid infiltrated presidential debate hosted by ABC last night. The television network should relearn the ABCs of what truly is important in terms of being a qualified candidate for the leader of the United States of America.
