The World Is Full Of Idiots and We Must Drive Amongst Them
A few weeks ago I had road rage. The flurry of anger and bad words were flung in the direction of a gang of Hell’s Angels who decided that a dirty little Acura Integra, whose driver was so short that you couldn’t see her head over the seat would be the perfect target to cut off whilst driving through Friday afternoon traffic. The five foot driver (yes that’s me, I know I’m short) was not particularly pleased with this decision on the part of the bad boy motorcycle gangs. Though as mentioned in a blog about the activities of the Rolling Stones, I was relieved to know that in fact all of my windows were rolled up as I badmouthed the inconsiderate bikers, flailing my arms and banging my steering wheel. Side note-young good looking man driving the blue BMW next to me, you can stop laughing now. The reason I was relieved has to do with the fact that 33 years ago the Hells Angels tried to kill Mick Jagger because Mick Jagger pissed them off. I don’t think I’m on their hit list just yet.
The reason why this is all so pertinent is that I came across an article in the North County Times (yes I love that newspaper) that was titled “The Need for ‘Idiot Training,‘” which of course I had to read, simply for the headline. The idiot training refers to the need to educate young drivers on how to deal with the aggression from other drivers that share the road. A particular line in the article caught my eye: “Nowadays(driver education) is also about teaching students how to avoid getting clipped by reckless drivers and how to calm down when people cut them off.” The answer: let it go. That is harder than it sounds, especially when you are left breathing the exhaust fumes of eight Hells Angels motorcycles. However, I do think that I will make sure that my windows are rolled up when I want to shout out in anger…maybe then people will just think I’m singing along to a Rolling Stones song…though I’m not sure which is more embarrassing.
