Putting Education Back in the Ring
The proposed education cuts in California have sobered moods in North County San Diego school districts. School administrators, teachers and parents are preparing for the ultimate battle when they try to outslug the Govenator. According to an article in the North County Times, “they are looking to rally against Schwarzenegger’s plan to suspend Proposition 98-a voter approved measure that guarantees minimum funding for public schools in times of economic uncertainty.” On the one side you have book-smart, well dressed school officials, teachers wielding rulers and fuming parents. On the other side you have the bulky, the Austrian-accented body-building star of really campy action films, who now hails as the governor of California. This could be a good match, it’s time to place your bets everyone.
Of course rather than just sit on the sidelines, it would be a lot more beneficial to actually jump in the ring and fight the good fight for the sake of the students. Organizers are already trying to coordinate meetings with local lawmakers to try and suspend Proposition 98 and the district is trying to scheme of ways to raise money to make up for the lost funds generated by the governor’s proposed budget cuts. Either way it looks like it’s going to be a tough battle. With the economy slumping and people getting feverish about how they spend their money they are hesitant to start doling out lump sums of cash. Perhaps though, in the midst of a recession we should think about ways to avoid a situation like this in the future. Perhaps it should start with education. Perhaps it can start now.
